Hanauma Bay, Oahu, Hawaii

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, a protected cove on southeast Oahu, was formed from the crater of an ancient volcano. It’s not so much a beach park but a protected national treasure. It’s an amazing place and easily one of the most beautiful spots in Hawaii. Visitors are required to watch a short orientation film, instructed on the conservation of the bay’s resources, and advised not to touch or collect anything in the water. Getting down to the beach far below requires a trolley ride or a short hike for the more adventurous. The bay is home to many species of marine life, including green seas turtles, and snorkeling is a very popular activity. Along the left side of the cove is a natural pool carved among the jagged rock and known as the Toilet Bowl. During times of high tide it can be quite treacherous and the pool area has been closed to the public for some time. Despite the many tourists I highly recommend visiting this Hanauma Bay as its well worth the effort.
